Customizing and sharing keyboard shortcuts

A tip for better working ergonomics in translation

Share

All versions of memoQ offer the possibility to customize keyboard shortcuts, for example if one is accustomed to the shortcuts in other software (such as Trados Studio or OmegaT) and wants to use these in memoQ to avoid confusion.

memoQ offers many useful features related to keyboard shortcut settings and their adaptation to your needs, including:

  • module-specific and global keyboard shortcut assignment options,

  • an exportable cheat sheet (in HTML format) to help you learn and remember keyboard shortcuts,

  • the possibility to assign shortcuts for writing special characters or tags,

and my personal favorite...

  • assignable shortcuts for writing term entries directly into one of the term bases ranked #1 through #9. Unfortunately, in the standard configuration of memoQ (as installed), this powerful terminology management feature is still (as of version 11) undermined a bit by the lack of default assignments for these nine commands.

The video above shows how to create a new keyboard shortcut resource and edit it to add those missing term base commands. Any other commands contained in the keyboard shortcut resource or other assignments can be edited in the same way.

It also shows how the "light resource" (memoQ jargon for a configuration file) for the keyboard shortcuts can be exported to an *.mqres as a backup or to share with others (as can be done with any other light resource configurations in memoQ). How to delete and import a keyboard shortcut resource is also explained.

The subject of keyboard shortcuts for term management is also discussed as part of my video discussing various aspects of multiple term bases in a memoQ project. The demonstration and other relevant discussion can be found here at the time 06:58. These term base shortcuts are invaluable for keeping specialized term bases clean and free of terms not relevant to specific subject areas, clients, etc. (depending on how you organize your term bases).
